Abstract

The harsh blame on psychoanalytic free association as a kind of psychic terror is entirely based on misunderstanding and deep-rooted bias. It is quite self-evident that free association as a main psychoanalytic technique has been proven to be the most useful tool and means for the exploration of the Unconscious through longstanding practical experiences. In terms of personal confession, free association can be considered similar to the auricular confession in traditional catholic rituals. Nevertheless free association and auricular confession are very different in form and matter. Namely free association treats the Unconscious carefully, but auricular confession deals with the Conscious. In free association, the analyzed lay themselves on the couch and they know the person who¡¯s listening to their confession well. But in auricular confession, they are not permitted to occupy the same space by the partition and they do not identify themselves. Most of all, the most basic difference is that the analyst explores the Unconscious and helps to get insight with the gradual change of psychic structures under mutual contraction and consent on the other hand, the priest helps people to confess their personal secrets and guilt, and forgives the repentant on behalf of God. I believe that psychoanalysis and religion both give help to change our mind, but there is a difference in goal and methodology. Therefore I think that they need not struggle and antagonize with mutual hostility toward each other.
